Frequently Asked Questions

Firefighting Simulation Program

  1. What simulations does the firefighting Simulation Program include?

It includes Tank fire extinguishing simulation, Heat radiation simulation and Water/foam monitor mapping software (Trajectory simulation).

  2. Is it possible to simulate any initial fire incidents such as rim seal fire?

As to tank fire simulation, only a full surface fire, where the entire surface of liquid in the tank is exposed and involved in the fire, is applicable.  A rim seal fire is considered as small-scale fire and not necessarily to simulate.

  3. Is FRT Module suitable for "Footprint" extinguishing theory?

Simulation of foam spreading and extinguishing time at "Footprint" extinguishing are not applicable.
Calculation of extinguishing time is based on the results of actual experiment conducted in Sweden (FOAMSPEX), that is only applicable for the case where foam is applied at edge of the tank.
So it is currently not available due to lack of case data.
However the simulation of foam trajectory is available for you to easily and visually see whether foam reaches the center of the tank.

  4. Can you show hose laying considering ground contours in 3D graphic, and calculate the pressure loss?

Yes, we can lay the hose considering ground contours in 3D graphic and show in 3D CAD drawing. However, Firefighting Simulation Program cannot calculate the pressure loss in hose.
In order to calculate the pressure loss in hose, suction pressure of pump, discharge pressure of foam, maximum working pressure of hose, etc., that it is very important to determine the location of booster pump, foam proportioner, etc., shall be taken into consideration.
We have developed another program which can calculate the pressure losses.  For this job, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  5. Is it possible to incorporate real time atmospheric conditions into the Program and perform the simulation?

Wind direction and speed is necessary to be input manually as the simulating condition.

  6. Is it possible to show the width of each road, contents of each tank, and transportation route of foam concentrate in Allocation Study Report of Large Capacity Foam Monitor System?

Rulers can be shown in the drawing. Contents of tank can be shown beside the tank.
Transportation route of foam concentrate vehicle can be simulated and shown with extra cost.

  7. Is it possible to incorporate the physical property of oils handled?

Yes. Our principle is to reflect the physical properties of the oil handled by the customer.

  8. We would like to know what the simulation programs and their outputs look like.

We prepare Demo Movie for each simulation to know the outline of the program. Please click here.

  9. Can we see the simulation results of our own plant layout by FM-VIEWER?

Yes, you can see the results by FM-VIEWER, since we will provide them as electronic data.
Also, since FM-VIEWER can change atmospheric conditions (wind direction, wind velocity), foam and water discharge nozzle directions, spray angle of water discharge nozzle etc., you can simulate under the various conditions by yourself.
Please note that fuel oil data, discharge characteristics and allocation of firefighting equipment cannot be changed by FM-VIEWER. If you would like to consider changing these conditions, please contact us.
Please check details on the page of Plant Disaster Preventing Simulation.

  10. For extinguishing tank fire, should we apply the foam trajectory method at center or edge of the tank?

USA recommends foam trajectory method at center of tank, while Europe recommends at edge. In our opinion, application of foam at the edge of tank is more reasonable and practical.

  11. When asking you of the design, does the plot plan must be of AutoCAD format?

In case if you only have the plot plan of paper copy only, we can make it to CAD data from it.  If you have CAD drawing other than AutoCAD format, we may be able to exchange into AutoCAD format. Please contact us.
For both case, information of height is required for making 3D CAD data.
If you have NO information about height, we can ask other company to make 3D CAD data from photos taken by airplane.

  12. Is it possible to take into consideration of rainy condition?

Unfortunately, the effect of rain is not incorporated.

  13. Is the simulation result is true??

Mostly, we believe the result is true. We think that the important thing is the simulation result is conform with the sense of the user.
Professor Hideo Ohtani of Yokohama National University, Safety Engineer of Royal Dutch Shell, and Coordinator of the LASTFIRE Project Dr Niall Ramsden say the results from the simulation is conform with their senses.
